FORT BONIFACIO, Metro Manila – The Philippine Army Commanding General, Lt. Gen. Gilbert I. Gapay lauds the 5th Scout Ranger Battalion’s operation against the Abu Sayyaf Group last February 23 in Barangay Bakong, Patikul Sulu.

Operating troops of the 15th Scout Ranger Company, 5th SRB were conducting a Focused Military Operations when they encountered around 40 ASG members hiding in their foxhole or “dugged in” bases.

Despite ASG’s defensive fighting position, the Army troops were able to neutralize two enemies as well as recover two M16 rifles and two cellular phones. After the firefight that lasted for about 3 hours, 105mm howitzer fires were delivered on the possible enemy withdrawal routes. An ongoing pursuit operation to further counteract the enemies is also being conducted.

According to reports, the ASG is primarily responsible in kidnap for ransom activities, suicide bombings, Improvised Explosive Devices’ planting and explosion as well as attacks toward military detachments.

“This feat manifests the tremendous and unwavering dedication of our soldiers to safeguard the Filipino people against the atrocities of our enemies. I commend the 11th Infantry Division, particularly the 5th Scout Ranger Battalion, in your leadership and teamwork that enabled the Army in sustaining the gains towards our overall mission accomplishment,” said Gapay.
