Army hopes for mass surrender of NPA supporters in Region 1

Posted to the Philippine Information Agency (Nov 20, 2019): Army hopes for mass surrender of NPA supporters in Region 1

SAN FERNANDO CITY, Nov. 18 (PIA) -- An official from the Philippine Army hopes that supporters of New People’s Army (NPA) in the Ilocos Region will follow suit the mass surrender that happened in Region 3 recently.

Major General Lenard T. Agustin, commander of the army’s 7th Infantry Division (7ID), made his call during the Re-Organizational Meeting of the Regional Peace and Order Council (RPOC-1) on Nov. 13 at the La Union Provincial Capitol, this city.

“The 7ID's mission for the first semester was to principally dismantle Kilusang Larangang Gerilya (KLG) Caraballo in Region 3, and we are glad to inform everybody that we were just able to do that,” said Agustin.

Major General Lenard T. Agustin, commander of the army’s 7th Infantry Division (7ID), presides over the re-organizational meeting of the Regional Peace and Order Council-1 which is attended by heads of government agencies and provincial governments in Region 1 on Nov. 13, 2019 at La Union Provincial Capitol, San Fernando City, La Union.

Agustin said the mass surrender of the NPA rebels and supporters in Nueva Ecija and Aurora was considered the biggest accomplishment of their unit in a single day since the start of the End Local Communist Armed Conflict (ELCAC) campaign.

For the remaining of their campaign for this year until the first quarter of 2020, he said “Our focus now has shifted to KLG South Ilocos Sur (SIS).”

“Here in Region 1, we can help each other convince our long lost brothers and sisters to finally come down and go back to the folds of the law,” he said.

He also said the area of responsibility of 7ID is vast and informed that their division covers not only Region 1 but the whole of Region 3 and some parts of Region 2 and Cordillera Administrative Region.

“Much as we we would like to focus our efforts here in Region 1, we just can’t do so for an added reason that some of my units are based in Mindanao. So, with those limitations, we certainly need the help of everybody,” he said.

He particularly asked for the support of the local chief executives and heads of government agencies in the region because as he said, “the answer to all the problems we are having now is plain and simple – good governance.”

Major General Lenard T. Agustin, commander of the army’s 7th Infantry Division (7ID), asks for the support of local chief executives and heads of government agencies in Region 1 to end local communist armed conflict in the region.

“We were able to obtain the support and cooperation of all government agencies and LGUs in Region 3 that led to the successful dismantling of KLG Caraballo that’s why I don't see any reason why we can’t have the same kind of cooperation here in Region 1,” Agustin said.

He added that there can never be a sustainable development if there is no inclusive peace in our hand.
