The newly-installed division superintendent of the Department of Education (DepEd) in the province of Iloilo said he will look into the alleged recruitment of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People's Army (CPP-NPA) in Iloilo schools.

Dr. Roel Bermejo, new Iloilo DepEd-Iloilo schools division superintendent, has officially assumed the post on Tuesday.

In an interview Wednesday, he said he has yet to receive a status report on the alleged recruitment.

On his first day as DepEd-Iloilo division superintendent, Bermejo has met with the Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Jr. to tackle priority programs in education.

“We will focus on the implementation of the K-12 basic curriculum and to improve the delivery of instruction, conduct assessment that will be the basis for the appropriate adjustment in the implementation of the curriculum in schools,” Bermejo said.

He said he had gathered the support of the Iloilo provincial government for the implementation of educational programs.

He added that Defensor has proposed developmental initiatives on the enhancement of a remedial reading program and the improvement of sanitation facilities.

Serving the DepEd for 28 years, Bermejo used to be a classroom teacher, principal, and educational program supervisor.
