OFF TO MINDANAO. The Philippine Navy sends off three of its newly-activated multi-purpose attack crafts (MPACs) in a ceremony in Sangley Point, Cavite on Wednesday (Oct. 16, 2019). Naval units in eastern and western Mindanao got a much-needed boost as three of the newly-activated multi-purpose attack crafts (MPACs) were deployed in these areas.
Philippine Navy (PN) spokesperson, Captain Salvador Henry Quinto, in a statement forwarded late Thursday, said send-off ceremonies took place at the Captain Moya Boat Landing in Sangley Point, Cavite on Wednesday.
Deployed were the three MPAC Mark IIIs set in motion last September 23 and part of the recently-activated Fourth Boat Attack Division of the Littoral Combat Force.
Quinto said one MPAC will be assigned under the operational control of Naval Forces Eastern Mindanao while the other two are underway to Naval Forces Western Mindanao in support of the ongoing anti-kidnapping operations of the Armed Forces of the Philippines in the area.
These boats are capable of running speeds of 30 to 45 knots and can be armed with machineguns and surface-to-surface Spike-ER missiles acquired from Israel.
"These brand new, highly maneuverable fast crafts play a crucial role in strengthening the country’s littoral defense and improve maritime interdiction capability. Like their missile-capable predecessors, these MPACs will soon be equipped with machine gun and missile systems, making them more lethal and capable of delivering precision fire against the enemies within the littoral," he added.
Meanwhile, Philippine Fleet deputy commander, Commodore Wilfredo Burgonio, gave emphasis on the value of naval vessels in the Naval Operating Forces as he graced the ceremony.
Also, he reminded sailors manning the MPACs to make the PN proud of their service.
“Continue making the Navy proud as you serve the Naval Operating Forces as well as the civilian populace who will need your service in the area and as you perform your duties,” Burgonio said.
