COTABATO CITY -- An off-duty soldier and a village councilman from a nearby province were killed in separate gun attacks here Monday, police said.

Sgt. Mike Elumba, 37, of Barangay Rosary Heights 10, was on a motorbike traversing Maria Clara Street when gunmen on a separate motorcycle opened fire on him at 3 p.m., according to Maj. Rustom Pastolero, city police station 2 commander.

Elumba, who belonged to the 9th Army Scout Ranger Company based in Pagadian City, died on the way to the hospital due to multiple gunshot wounds in the head and body.

Police found three empty shells for a .45-caliber pistol at the crime scene.

Also, at about 9 p.m., a village official of Barangay Mudseng, Midsayap, North Cotabato was gunned down by still unidentified gunmen along LR Sebastian St., Barangay Rosary Heights 10.

Baser Salim Adam, 34, sustained multiple gunshot wounds in various parts of his body.

“Adam and his wife were walking along LR Sebastian Street when two men on a motorbike arrived and shot him from behind using .45-caliber pistol,” Pastolero said.

Adam’s wife was unharmed in the incident.

The village official was declared dead on arrival at the Cotabato Regional and Medical Center, which is only about 50 meters away from the crime scene.

Police believed a “rido” (family feud) between Adam and another Muslim clan back home could have triggered the shooting.

Police probers are still investigating the shooting incidents.
