Over 100 former rebels in Compostela Valley given financial aid

From the Philippine Information Agency (Jul 15, 2019): Over 100 former rebels in Compostela Valley given financial aid

NABUNTURAN, Compostela Valley (PIA) - More than 100 members of the New People’s Army who surrendered in Compostela Valley have received financial assistance from the government under the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (ECLIP).

Governor Jayvee Tyron Uy handed over P15,000 to P65,000 worth of checks during ceremonies at the session hall of the Capitol.

Aside from the cash assistance, additional cash was given to 82 of the surrenderees as compensation for surrendered firearms.

Provincial Director Noel Duarte of the Department of Interior and Local Government said ECLIP aims to persuade the rebels to surrender and lay down their arms.

“The objective of the program is really to convince the rebels to go back to the government and for them to be productive members of the community,” Duarte said.

Meanwhile, a former rebel named alias Dats thanked the government for taking good care of him and his comrades during their surrender.

Dats recounted that he was part of the rebel groups that fought with government forces for 29 years. He laid down his arms and surrendered to the government in September 2018 after he observed positive developments in the province.

“Tungod kay nakita nako na dili na maayo para sa katawhan ug daghan na ug kadaot ang nahitabo sa among lugar, maong nag declare ko na magsurrender sa kasundaluhan para atubangan ang makatarunganon nga serbisyo sa katawhan,” Dats said.

(Because I saw that its no longer good for the people and it brought so much devastation to our place, that is why I surrendered to the soldiers to bring the rightful service to the people.)

Some of the former rebels would have to stay inside the army camp as they were still undertaking the activities under the Oplan Pagbabago program of Compostela Valley.

“We initiate the Oplan Pagbabago since not all rebels will be under the ECLIP program, and to address the need to transform the community progressive and peaceful one,” Duarte said. (PIA XI)
