More former Negros rebels yesterday got P485,000 in financial and livelihood assistance from the Department of Interior and Local Government through its Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-CLIP).

Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. and DILG provincial director Carmelo Orbista, assisted by Brig. Gen. Benedict Arevalo, 303rd Infantry Brigade commander, and Provincial Social Welfare and Development Officer Elena Serenias and Provincial Planning and Development Officer Ma.Lina Sanogal yesterday led the distribution of assistance to nine former rebels, who surrendered in September last year, to the 62nd Infantry and 3rd Civil Military Operations Battalions.

Seven of the nine
former New People’s Army rebels got P65,000 each, while the two others received an initial P15,000 in financial assistance.


Marañon urged former rebels to give their children the privilege of getting quality education, after abandoning the armed struggle.

Aside from financial and livelihood assistance, the nine former rebels were also enrolled in the Negros Occidental Comprehensive Health Care Program of the provincial government, which entitles them and their families to free hospitalization in any government hospital in the province.

Brig. Gen. Benedict Arevalo, 303rd Infantry Brigade commander, said yesterday that the former rebels are being secured by the Philippine Army.

On top of that, former rebels who surrender firearms will also received renumeration, depending on the guns surrendered.

Lt. Col. Egberto Dacoscos, 62nd Infantry Battalion commander, yesterday said the surrender of former rebels form part of the Community Support Program effort they are implementing in rebel-affected barangays of central Negros.

The DILG is encouraging local chief executives to support the entry of former communist rebels through the E-CLIP of the Interagency Task Force Balik-Loob.
