After suffering major blows, the New People’s Army has been incessant in its desire to conduct offensives against government forces.
But the good news is that their plans were thwarted by the very people they want to attack.
On April 12, 2019, a fresh skirmish occurred between the Philippine Army’s 61st Infantry (Hunter) Battalion and suspected NPA members at Barangay Nalbang, Leon, Iloilo.
The encounter occurred around 5:20 a.m. as 61st IB troopers were responding to reports from locals that armed persons were seen in the area.
No soldier was injured or killed during the 20-minute firefight.
Lieutenant Colonel Joel Benedict Batara, 61st IB commander, said it is possible that the rebels suffered casualties based on blood stains found in their escape route to Barangay Agra, Leon.
According to reports, the soldiers encountered around 20 rebels from Sibat Platoon of the Komiteng Rehiyon Panay-Southern Front Committee.
The group was led by a certain Nahum Camariosa alias Bebong.
In haste, the rebels left behind firearms and personal belongings,
These include three backpacks, two anti-personnel landmines, two magazines of caliber .45 pistol; a magazine for7.62 mm M14 rifle with live ammunitions, subversive documents, and medical paraphernalia.
Batara revealed that the rebels have plans to harass government forces and army detachments as part of their tactical offensives in connection with the commemoration of the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) founding anniversary on April 24.
The NDFP is “a coalition of revolutionary social and economic justice organizations, agricultural unions, trade unions, indigenous rights groups, leftist political parties, and other related groups in the Philippines.”
But for the Philippine Army, the NDFP is one of the communist terrorists’ support groups.
Batara also commended the public’s effort to report the presence of the CPP-NPA Terrorists that resulted in the successful deterrence of their terroristic activities.
“With the people now helping the Army locate enemies, rest assured that the safety of the people of Panay will be our top priority,” he said.
Prior to this, the Philippine Army’s 3rd Infantry Division recorded eight encounters between Army troops and the NPA rebels in Negros Island and eight in Panay Island since January 2019.
This started with the 61IB clashing with the rebels at the vicinity of Sitio Tigmahan, Barangay Alimodias last Jan 11; Sitio Lay, Barangay Dalije on Jan 13; and Barangay Cabatangan, Lambunao and in Barangay Tigmalapad, Miag-ao on Jan 15.
There was a lull in February until another encounter erupted on March 17 at Barangay Mulangan, Igbaras, Iloilo.
Two days later, another firefight happened at Barangay Osorio, San Remigio, Antique; on March 20 at Barangay Igdaluyon, Igbaras; and on March 24 at Barangay Alimodian, Miag-ao.
