152 individuals flee as troops, NPA clash in MisOcc

From the Philippine News Agency (Apr 12, 2019): 152 individuals flee as troops, NPA clash in MisOcc

PAGADIAN CITY, Zamboanga del Sur -- Some 152 individuals fled their homes as government troops and New People's Army (NPA) rebels clashed late Wednesday in Barangay Nueva Vista, Don Victoriano, in the nearby province of Misamis Occidental.
Raul Tambur, Don Victoriano municipal disaster risk reduction management action officer, told the Philippine News Agency that 72 individuals from the area immediately evacuated to the municipal gymnasium while 80 others rushed to the barangay evacuation center for safety.

Tambur said the 80 residents failed to go to the respective evacuation pick up points due to the ongoing encounter and were all confined at the barangay evacuation center.

Tambur said the Don Victoriano municipal government provided basic needs of the evacuees including meals and transportation assistance after the release of clearance from the military for residents to safely return home.

Meanwhile, eight soldiers belonging to the Army's 10th Infantry Battalion were wounded after an anti-personnel mine (AP mine) exploded near the Napangan Barangay Hall.

The troops, who were part of the reinforcement team, were conducting clearing operation when the AP mine exploded. They were advancing towards Barangay Nueva Vista at the time of the incident.

Lt. Col. John Andrada, Army’s 10th Infantry Battalion commander, disclosed the combat operation was launched after the NPA rebels tried to attack a detachment but the troops repelled them.

Andrada said they gathered information from the residents that some of the NPA attackers were injured during the failed attack “that is why we are calling on them to surrender their casualties so they can be treated properly”.

The CPP-NPA is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the Philippines.
