From the Philippine Information Agency (Mar 16): Two Cordillerans in PMA Top 10
Two Cordillerans are among the Top 10 of the graduating cadets of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Alab Tala Class of 2018.
Cadet 1st Class Ricardo Witawit Liwaden who hails from Gawana, Barlig, Mountain Province is the class salutatorian of the Alab Tala or the Alagad ng Lahing Binigkis ng Tapang at Lakas Class of 2018.
As the class salutatorian, Liwaden will receive the Vice Presidential Saber from Vice President Leni Robredo and the Philippine Army Saber from Philippine Army Commanding General, Lieutenant General Rolando Joselito Bautista during the graduation rites at the Fort Del Pilar here on Sunday March 18. He will also receive the Sports and Physical Development Plaque, Tactics Group Award and the Athletic Saber.
Liwaden’s father is a farmer and his mother is a retired teacher. His father he said inspired him to pursue a military career.
“He is my role model. My father was the one who convinced me on what course I would take up in college and what branch of service I would want to go to in the military of which since my plebe year, I decided to volunteer for the Army and it is where I will be serving," said Liwaden. He was 4th year civil engineering student at the University of Baguio when he entered the PMA.
Another Cordilleran in the Top 10 is Baguio boy Cadet 1st Class Paolo Balla Briones from Camp Allen who is No. 8. 8.
Like Liwaden, Briones is inspired by his father who did not finish his stint at the PMA due illness but still served as an enlisted personnel in the military service. His mother is a housewife. Briones finished first year in civil engineering at the Saint Louis University before entering the academy.
Briones, who will enter the air force, explained the difference of being a Cordilleran among the other graduating cadets.
"We are Cordilleran’s who are strong enough and intellectually capable. We are trained in different aspects and we will give whatever we can depending on how we perform as soldiers in the military," Briones said.
Liwaden and Briones are among the 282-strong PMA Class of 2018 composed of 207 male and 75 female cadets graduating this Sunday with President Rodrigo Roa Duterte as the guest of honor and speaker.
