WAR ON TERROR: US reiterates continued support for PHL efforts

From GMA News (Sep 6): WAR ON TERROR: US reiterates continued support for PHL efforts

US Ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim has reiterated the US’ continued support for the Philippines’ counter-terrorism efforts, saying they are consulting “very closely” with the Armed Forces of the Philippines on this matter.

“We are deeply concerned about the possible terrorist threat here in the Philippines. I think the situation in Marawi has reminded us of the real and serious threat that we face here in the Philippines. Maute brothers, Abu Sayyaf, these militants I think have looked for an opportunity to pose serious threat [to] the Philippines,” Kim said.

Kim said terrorism is a concern not just of the Philippines but of the region and the US as well.

“I do know that we continue to consult very closely with senior members of the AFP to look for best ways, most effective ways to support [the] AFP’S effort,” he added.

The US’ P3 Orion surveillance plane has been seen flying over Marawi to provide the AFP with surveillance images of the main battle area.

“We look forward to providing additional ISR (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance) support through technologically advanced platforms that will help the AFP both in Marawi and anywhere else where terrorists may strike,” Kim said.

Last August 28, the commanding general of the Armed Forces Western Mindanao Command, Lieutenant General Carlito Galvez, said the Philippines will be seeking the help of other countries in dealing with the numerous IEDs (improvised explosive devices) planted by local terrorists to delay the advance of elite military and police forces operating in Marawi City.

Asked whether the US intends to send equipment or personnel to assist the AFP deal with the IEDs, Kim replied, “I don’t have an announcement about equipment for disposing IEDs. The more important aspect of our cooperation with the AFP is training and technical advice on a broad range of things. I expect that we will be having some training specifically related to the IED problem.”

Last July, the Philippines received two Cessna surveillance aircraft from the US as part of a grant. The two planes are worth $30 million or around P1.67 billion.

Before this, the Philippines also received from the United States a RQ-11B Raven unmanned aerial vehicle system consisting of three drones, boosting the surveillance capability of the Philippine Army and the Philippine Marines.

This was on top of more than 400 M203 grenade launchers and 85 sniper rifles also provided as part of a grant.
