Troops recover 2 Indonesians seized in Sabah

From the Philippine News Agency (Sep 7): Troops recover 2 Indonesians seized in Sabah

Government troops have safely recovered two Indonesian sailors seized by Abu Sayyaf bandits more than 10 months ago in Sabah, a top military official said Thursday.

Brig. Gen. Cirilito Sobejana, Joint Task Force Sulu commander, identified them as Saparuddin Koni and Sawal Maryam, boat skipper and crew, respectively.

Sobejana said the they were safely recovered at around 6:30 a.m. Thursday in Barangay Bunot, Indanan, Sulu.

Sobejana said the two Indonesians were aboard a sports utility vehicle that was intercepted by the troops.

He did not say whether the two were traveling with companions or just themselves.

He said they were immediately taken to Camp General Teodulfo Bautista Station Hospital for medical check-up.

From there, he said they were taken to the headquarters of the Joint Task Force Sulu for custodial debriefing.

The Abu Sayyaf bandits seized Koni and Maryam aboard a Malaysian-flagged trawler on November 19, 2016 in Merabong waters near Kunak District, Sabah.

They were forced to board an unmarked speed boat that sped to the high seas.
