Three Maute fighters surrendered in Marawi as troops continue to advance and gain ground in the battle area in Marawi City.
This was revealed by Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom) chief Lieutenant General Carlito Galvez in a press briefing in Marawi on Friday, September 28.
"I believe hindi na nila kaya ang (they can't anymore stand the) intense fighting," Galvez said.
Galvez said they are "regular fighters" or the recruits of the Maute Group, differentiating them from the so-called "hard-core fighters" who want to die as martyrs in the battle area.
It's unclear when the Maute fighters surrendered. Galvez refused to give more details, citing operational security.
"We are still withholding the information because of some critical matters. We still have a lot of operations ongoing," Galvez said.
The military is using loudspeakers in the battle area to encourage the Maute fighters to surrender. It's the scenario that the military said could end the war soonest.
