The police are conducting an in-depth probe to unmask the gunmen behind the attempt to kill a government accountant in Basilan province.

Five others, including the accountant’s wife and daughter, escaped unscathed during the shoting incident that occurred at around 5:45 p.m. Tuesday in front of Saint Lourdes Chapel in Barangay Maligue, Isabela City, the capital of Basilan province.

Supt. Jerome Afuyog, Isabela City police chief, identified the victim as Hadji Karim Mahlun Asakil, the accountant of the Basilan provincial government.

Unscathed were Asakil’s wife, Monira; daughter, Rabia; Anrakina Martinez, an employee of the provincial government; and, two relatives namely Salma Asakil and Durmina Esmael.

Afuyog said Asakil was driving a car on the way home when one of two men riding tandem in a motorcycle that tailed them opened fire hitting the provincial accountant.

Afuyog said the suspects wearing red hooded jackets sped towards the Isabela-Maluso National Highway after the incident.

He said Asakil was taken to a hospital in Isabela City and was later transferred to a medical facility in this city.

He said that all possible motives are being looked into in a bid to establish and arrest the suspects behind the drive-by shooting.
