United PHL needed to beat terrorism — AFP spokesperson

From the Philippine News Agency (Jun 16): United PHL needed to beat terrorism — AFP spokesperson

To totally defeat terrorism in all its forms as exemplified by the ongoing conflict in Marawi City, all Filipinos must unite to effectively combat this evil.

This was bared by Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) spokesperson Brig. Gen. Restituto Padilla in briefing late Thursday.

"The battle that is ongoing in Marawi is no longer a simple battle, it's already a fight between good and evil," he said in Filipino.

"We need to come together as one united republic against a common enemy and that is terrorism, the evil that is brought by terrorism," he noted.

As of this posting, government losses in the conflict which started May 23 was placed at 58 troopers killed, 26 civilians executed and 206 terrorists neutralized.

Padilla stated that the reason why the government is taking heavy losses in the ongoing campaign is because of the AFP's inherent respect for International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and Human Rights (HR).

"The life of a soldier is priceless, it has no equal especially to the commanders leading his men to battle. But due to our respect for IHL and HR, we are exerting utmost care in our operations to ensure that no civilians will be harmed nor killed," he said.
