NPA rebel killed in Kalinga encounter

From the Manila Bulletin (May 14): NPA rebel killed in Kalinga encounter

A New People’s Army (NPA) rebel was killed and a soldier wounded in an encounter between government troops and guerrilla forces in the outskirts Balbalan town, Kalinga province, the other day.

Major General Paul T. Atal, commander of the Philippine Army’s 5th Infantry Division (5ID), confirmed that the encounter at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in sitio Ibong, Barangay Balbalasang, Balbalan, resulted in the killing of a still unidentified guerrilla.

The 30-minute gun battle saw elements of the army’s 50th Infantry Battalion (50IB), under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Gulliver Seneres, in action. Atal did not identify the wounded soldier.

As the rebels retreated deeper into the hinterlands, soldiers found the body of the rebel and collected an M-16 rifle, two short magazine assemblies, and 456 M-16 cartriges.

“We also extend our condolences to the family of the fallen rebel. If he had only chosen the peaceful way, maybe he would still be alive today; to all the NPA rebels, I urge you once again to please return to the fold of the law and let us settle our differences in a peaceful manner as we are all brother Filipinos,” Atal said.

Meanwhile in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), the NPA high command in the region warned the public against fake NPA rebels demanding revolutionary taxes.

In an email received by the Manila Bulletin, the Leonardo Pacsi Command NPA-Mountain Province Command, through its spokesperson Magno Udyaw, revealed that they have been receiving complaints about individuals identifying themselves as NPA guerillas and extorting money using the Communist Party of the Philippines, NPA, and Cordillera People’s Democratic Front (CPDF).

It claimed that the NPA posers who used the name of CPDF spokesperson Simon “Ka Filliw” Naogsan are allegedly “state agents” supposedly deployed by the government to ruin the image of the communist movement.
