From the Sun Star-Cagayan de Oro (May 15): 2 NPA rebels killed in Zamboanga Sibugay
Two New People's Army (NPA) rebels were killed Saturday, May 13, in a firefight with soldiers at Sitio Malagak, Barangay Guinoman, Diplahan, Zamboanga Sibugay.
Lieutenant Colonel Jo-ar Herrera, spokesperson of 1st Infantry "Tabak" Division (1ID) of the Philippine Army said troops of 44th Infantry Battalion of 102nd Infantry Brigade clashed with about thirty rebels at around 6 p.m. which also wounded two local civilian volunteers.
Herrea said the slain rebels were identified only through the aliases "Henry" and "Tibo." Both are said to be members of the NPA’s Feliciano Bravo Command operating in the boundary of Zamboanga del Norte and Sibugay provinces.
The rebels’ remains were brought by soldiers to the village of Guinoman for proper identification.
Troops also recovered an AK-47 and one M16 assault rifle.
The two wounded civilian volunteers are now confined at a hospital in Diplahan town under heavy guard for "security reasons," Herrera said.
“This is a positive result of the military’s continued engagements with the local populace and Local Government Units to neutralize insurgency,” Brigadier General Rolly Bautista, commanding general of 1ID, said.
“There will be no let up of operations against these bandits in order to protect the people and the communities,” Bautista said.
