From ABS-CBN (May 24): AFP ensures no spillover of Marawi firefight


The Philippine military on Wednesday said there will be no spillover of the firefight between the military and Maute terrorists in Marawi City.
Lt. General Carlito Galvez Jr., chief of the Armed Forces Western Mindanao Command, said they are currently trying to contain up to 80 members of the terrorist group.

"The situation outside Marawi is still normal. We're trying to contain the situation on Marawi and we will ensure there will be no spillover of the situation. We will develop and contain this as soon as possible," he told ANC on Wednesday morning.

Galvez said the they are pursuing Maute terrorists in 3 major locations but declined to give further details as they pursue their operations in the area.

"There are some pockets of engagement and we're trying to clear the roads so we could ensure the safety of people and properties in Marawi," he said.

The AFP official said the military is in close contact with the governor of Lanao del Sur and the mayor of Marawi City even after President Rodrigo Duterte declared Martial Law in Mindanao.
