From the Visayan Daily Star (May 23): 3 Army units get new chiefs
Three Army units of the 3rd Infantry Division in Negros Island Region and Panay have new commanders.
Lt. Col. Antonio Tumnog is back in Negros as commander of the newly-created 1st Negros Island Geographical Battalion (NIGBn). He used to the commander of the 3rd Civil Military Operations Battalion, while still a major, in Escalante City, Negros Occidental.
The 2nd NIGBn deployed in Negros Oriental is now commanded by Major Edgie Villan.
Lt. Col. Arnel Cabugon, acting 3ID Public Affairs Office chief, said yesterday that the two Geographic Battalions are composed of members of the Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit and Armed Forces of the Philippines reservists.
Cabugon said the activation of two Geographic Battalions aims to provide command and control to CAFGU units within a specified areas, establish Internal Territorial Defense System (ITDS), conduct of community operations, facilitate inter-agency linkages, establish intelligence net, provide limited community assistance, support to civil law enforcement and conduct of disasters response operations and civil disturbance operations, among others.
The 61st Infantry Battalion also has a new commander.
Maj. Gen. Jon Aying,3ID commander, installed Lt.Col. Sisenando Magbalot Saturday as the new 61IB commander. He replaced Col. Leonardo Peña, who commanded the 61IB for almost two years, since October 16, 2015.
Before his new position, Magbalot, who is a member of the Philippine Military Academy Class 1995, used to be the 3ID Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations.
