State forces overrun NPA camp, recover high-powered firearms

From GMA News (Mar 5): State forces overrun NPA camp, recover high-powered firearms

Government soldiers recovered high-powered firearms and improvised explosive devices in a communist rebel camp they overran on Saturday, days after military operations were conducted in a town in Surigao del Norte.

Citing military information, GMA News stringer Natz Corbeta said that the firearms, explosives, and subversive documents were recovered from an abandoned New People's Army camp in Barangay Tinago in Malimono town.

The Military materiel the soldiers from the 30th Infantry Battalion recovered include Armalite and AK-47 assault riffles, improvised explosive devices, assorted medicines and medical supplies, subversive documents, and an NPA flag.

A junior military officer was wounded in the operations against the communist insurgents and at least four new NPA recruits were killed in skirmishes that lasted for days, military sources were quoted as saying.

Col. Rico Amaro, commanding officer of the 30th IB, told reporters that the rebels may have been maintaining the camp in the area for a long time, terrorizing the residents there and extorting "revolutionary taxes" from the people.
