Provincial Government of Sarangani tapped Muslim community leaders to heighten its campaign against violent extremism and illegal drugs in its aim to keep the province peaceful.

Violent radicalism and proliferation of illegal drugs are among the security issues being faced by the national and local government agencies.

As an initiative to capacitate the Muslim community leaders to help in the drive, the Office of the Governors hosted Training of Trainers on Values Enhancement and Advocacy on Anti-Radicalism and Anti-Illegal Drugs on March 14-16, 2017 held at Sarangani Highlands Garden in General Santos City.

Engr. Tohami Ibrahim from the Bangsamoro Development Agency and Sheikh Nhorul-am Abdullah of Bangsamoro Communications Network were the resource persons of the activity participated by more than fifty Muslim women leaders, Imams, Asatidz and heads of local Muslim organizations.

Ibrahim handled the lectures on values transformation and application of Islamic values in development. He also tackled radicalism and illegal drugs as menace to society.

The facilitator divulged some manifestations that the Muslim youth are being recruited by the radical groups.

Abdullah delved on faith, its role in developing Islamic values, Islamic values in dealing with stakeholders and the role of Muslim women in community development. As per request of the women participants, he further discussed the rights of women in Islam.

The resource person together with other local Ulama (Islamic scholars) orientated Muslim community members last October and November in the municipalities of Maitum, Kiamba, Maasim, Alabel, Malapatan and Glan on the Islamic perspective on violent radicalism and illegal drugs.

He pointed out that the importance of seeking deeper knowledge on Islam in able to know how the teachings of radical groups differ.

Astads Abdulbayan Laguialam, Project Manager of Madaris for Peace Project under the Office of the Governor, said the participants of the trainers training will be asked to help in the advocacy at the grassroots communities.

Part of the activity was the crafting of plan on how the training participants would carry out the advocacy in their respective target audiences in the province.

Among the initiatives they committed to undertake is to heighten lecture on Ibadaah among the Madaris pupils and inclusion of the advocacy against radicalism and illegal drugs in Khutbah and Da’wah on air. They will also organize forum to re-echo the advocacy in the grassroots communities.

Sarangani Govermor Steve Chiongbian Solon cited the importance of stakeholders’ participation in efforts that will keep the community away from violent radicalism and guard the youth from the proliferation of illegal drugs.
