Trooper killed in NPA IED attack in Capiz

From the Philippine News Agency (Feb 7): Trooper killed in NPA IED attack in Capiz

A trooper from the 61st Infantry Battalion was killed after New People's Army (NPA) rebels detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) in Tapaz, Capiz Tuesday morning.

Lt. Col. Ericson Rosana, 3rd Infantry Division public affairs office chief, said the incident took place 6:15 a.m. at Sitio Tina, Barangay Acuña.

He added that 61st Infantry Battalion troopers were responding to reports that NPA rebels were laying IED in the area and was about to disarm one when the rebels detonated another improvised landmine.

The blast killed one Cpl. Ricky Bill Farinas, Rosana disclosed.

3rd Infantry Division commander Major Gen. Jon Aying vehemently condemned the terroristic attack of the rebels, citing the shrapnel indifference to civilian and military targets.

"The 3rd Infantry Division will continue to support the local government units and other agencies in the delivery of basic services and development programs in the communities (despite the IED attacks)," he added.

Rosana said this was second IED laying activity the rebels had committed in their area-of-operations with the first one taking place last Feb. 4 at Barangay Cabatangan, Lambunao, Iloilo.
