Authorities have further strengthened security while troops were deployed to track down the gunmen who ambushed a passenger bus that injured eight people in this city.

The local police reported the incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday in the boundaries of Barangays Buenavista and Muti.

Investigation showed the bus of the Rural Transit Management Inc. (RTMI) with body number 9554 was traveling to Pagadian City from this city with 34 passengers on board when ambushed by around five gunmen.

Police identified the injured passengers as Noel Lopez, 45; John Baynosa, 36; Jaman Alam, 53; Ednalia Gilla, 20; Raniel Abeng, 22; Christopher Cagan, 35; George Elnas, 35; and, Genevie Lopez, 35.

Police said Seledonio Sugabo, the bus driver, asked for assistance at a nearby military detachment.

The troops at the detachment rushed but the gunmen were gone when they reached the ambush site.

The wounded passengers were taken to the hospital while another RTMI bus fetched the other passengers to their destination in Pagadian City.

Investigation is ongoing.
