Gov't to raise 'revolutionary tax' with leftist rebels: finance chief

From ABS-CBN (Nov 8): Gov't to raise 'revolutionary tax' with leftist rebels: finance chief

The government will raise in peace negotiations the "revolutionary tax" that communist insurgents require from targeted businessmen, Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez said Tuesday.

Dominguez said not all businesses had the resources to increase their security to avoid paying the New People's Army (NPA).

While he was in the private sector, the finance chief said: "I just simply refuse to pay it."
"This is really a serious concern and it has to be part of the peace negotiation with the NPA," Dominguez said.

Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process Jesus Dureza was tasked to raise the matter with the rebels, the finance chief said.

Duterte restarted peace talks with the Communist Party of the Philippines soon after assuming office in June. Formal negotiations are being hosted on Oslo, Norway.
