Filipino-Muslim youth leaders meet with Malaysian peers during an educational tour

From the Philippine News Agency (Nov 24): Filipino-Muslim youth leaders meet with Malaysian peers during an educational tour

Fifty Filipino-Muslim youth leaders are in Kuala Lumpur for a five-day goodwill visit and educational tour where they will have a series of interactions with their Malaysian peers from various cultural and religious backgrounds from November 22 to 25, the Department of Foreign Affairs on Thursday said.

The youth participants who range from 15 to 18 years old and who are mostly from Sulu Province, arrived aboard a Philippine Air Force C-130 plane on November 22. They were welcomed at Royal Malaysian Air Force base in Subang by Philippine Ambassador to Malaysia J. Eduardo Malaya and Embassy officers and staff.

“The visit is an opportunity for our Muslim youth to be exposed to another perspective outside of the Philippines, and to promote understanding and goodwill with their Malaysian counterparts and hopefully to learn about the values of moderation and tolerance of other cultures and beliefs. We hope that the participants would have a good experience and would share this to their fellow youth back home,” Ambassador Malaya said.

The first ever Muslim Filipino Youth Leaders' Educational Tour is a project of the civil-military operations office of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), in cooperation with the Embassy.

The delegation is led by Western Mindanao Command (WESMINCOM) Deputy Commander B/Gen. Jose P. Cabanban.

The participants were welcomed at the Embassy, where they had a briefing on Philippine-Malaysian relations on November 23. They also performed a selection of Muslim songs and dances to the delight of consular clients at the Embassy’s consular area.

The youth will also visit different Malaysian government offices such as the Dewan Rakyat (Malaysian Parliament) and the Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), organizations and schools such as the Global Movement of Moderates and the International Islamic University of Malaysia, as well as representatives from Malaysia’s multicultural communities.
