Duterte orders relaunch of Bangsamoro Peace Process

From the Manila Bulletin (Aug 2): Duterte orders relaunch of Bangsamoro Peace Process

Peace Adviser Jesus Dureza said the Bangsamoro Peace process will be discussed soon in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia over an interview with CNN, Tuesday.

“President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered us to go to Kuala Lumpur soon to relaunch the peace process with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF),” Dureza said.

Dureza did not indicate a specific time, but noted one of the agenda of the meeting is the updated roadmap for Bangsamoro.

He added the meeting will be held in Malaysia because of the country’s contribution in the negotiation.

“Malaysia contributed a lot in the Bangsamoro peace process. We’d like to keep their participation active,” he said.

Dureza furthered, this is in complimentary with the government’s efforts of bringing peace to the country.

“While you negotiate peace work, you also work on the conditions of the people. So we need to do peace and development simultaneously,” he explained, “We use the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) as a working document to move forward, the convergence of the Moro groups–Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) and also the indigenous peoples,” he added.

Peace talks with the National Democratic Front (NDF) will proceed on August 20 in Oslo, Norway. Dureza mentioned he is optimistic detained NDF consultants will be released in time for the talks.

“We are talking with Nur Misuari directly and we want him to be a strong partner for peace,” Dureza said.

With regards to the failed ceasefire with the Communist Party, Dureza said it is best to discuss it across the table during the peace talk, “We can put up a ceasefire mech. It’s in the agenda”.
