Cops, Moro rebels seize marijuana plants in Cotabato provinces

From the Philippine News Agency (Aug 6): Cops, Moro rebels seize marijuana plants in Cotabato provinces

Police authorities in South Cotabato have launched a manhunt against two men who maintained a marijuana plantation in the upland town of Lake Sebu.

Chief Insp. Joey Bagaygay, Lake Sebu town police chief, identified the suspects who have been maintaining and cultivating the plantation as Sulay Odo and Gerry Nazareno.

More than 100 marijuana plants were seized in Sitio Takul, Barangay Talisay in what police described as well fortified and beautifully intertwined with corns and other crops.

Bagaygay said concerned citizens alerted the police about the existence of the plantation which they said was repeatedly visited by armed men.

According to Bagaygay, the suspects have been under police surveillance for illegal drug pushing in nearby town of Surallah.

Carmen, North Cotabato, Moro rebels who earlier vowed to help the Duterte administration get rid their communities of illegal drugs and marijuana, made its promised fulfilled Friday.

In a statement, the MILF said it destroyed more than three hectares of marijuana plantation in Barangay Tupig, Carmen, North Cotabato.

The cultivators who were not around during the rebel raid remained unidentified.

According to the MILF, crime incidence was high in areas around or near the marijuana plantation like murders, robbery and rape. So they decided to investigate and traced the crimes to high cases of marijuana use.

The more than 3,000 marijuana plants were burned by the MILF and photos of which were forwarded to the government and MILF peace panels for documentation.
