Security forces in have arrested an Abu Sayyaf militant tagged as involved in kidnappings of 21 mostly Asian and European holidaymakers that happened 16 years ago in Malaysia’s Sipadan island resort, police said Monday.

Police said Edward Pisan alias Salih Jainal, 52, was nabbed outside the Mindpro Mall in Zamboanga City after a long surveillance operations.

Superintendent Rogelio Alabata, the regional police spokesman, said Pisan has long been wanted by authorities after being implicated in the mass kidnappings in 2000.

He said Judge Ernesto Gutierrez in Sulu province has issued a warrant for the arrest of Pisan, a follower of Abu Sayyaf leader Galib Andang.

Pisan did not give any statement to the press on the allegations against him, but police said it is investigating the man to extract information about his group.
