AFP verifying Abu Sayyaf involvement in Timorese crew members’ kidnapping

From GMA News (Jul 11): AFP verifying Abu Sayyaf involvement in Timorese crew members’ kidnapping

The Armed Forces' Western Mindanao Command (WesMinCom) on Monday said it is looking into the alleged involvement of the Abu Sayyaf Group in the kidnapping of three Timorese crew members last June 9.

The WesMinCom said it has "yet to validate the veracity of reports" on the matter.

"We are not, however, discounting the fact that the said abduction may have been perpetrated by the Abu Sayyaf Group, but the probability is low based on proximity and the intelligence reports gathered by troops," the statement read.

The WesMinCom said the three captives were taken off the waters of Felda Sahabat in Malaysia at 11:40 p.m. Saturday by five armed men on a speedboat.

The Timorese victims were identified as Lorence Koten, Teo Dorus Kopong, and a certain Emanuel, crew members of a vessel owned by Chia Tong Lim.

They were with five other crew members, who have since been released and now in the custody of the Marin Police Post in Lahad Datu town.
