Communist insurgents ambushed a group of army soldiers in southern Philippines and wounding an infantryman in the latest offensive ahead of a scheduled peace talks with the Duterte government in Oslo, Norway.

The New People’s Army said many soldiers were either killed or wounded in the ambush, but the 4th Infantry Division said only one was wounded in the attack which occurred in Tandag City in Surigao del Sur province.

The soldier, Pfc. Marlo Bayo, a member of the 36th Infantry Battalion, was evacuated to Cagayan de Oro City. Bayo’s unit was sent to rescue PO1 Richard Yu Jr. who was taken prisoner by rebels in Carmen town on July 5.

The military said operations against the rebel group were continuing in the region, but the NPA said it was also doubling its assault on government troops and policemen areas where it is active.
