Abu Sayyaf prisoner kills soldier in Basilan

From the Mindanao Examiner (Jul 11): Abu Sayyaf prisoner kills soldier in Basilan

Government soldiers shot dead an Abu Sayyaf prisoner who grabbed the weapon of his army escort and killed him in Basilan province in the Muslim autonomous region in southern Philippines.

The slain soldier – Sgt. Carlito Macotocruz, of the 18th Infantry Battalion – died instantly from the attack that happened while soldiers were transporting the unidentified militant whom they captured in Tipo-Tipo town over the weekend.

The attacker was also killed by other soldiers before he can fire again. The military declined to provide details of the incident, but had confirmed it.

It was not immediately known how the prisoner was able to grab the soldier’s weapon or whether the Western Mindanao Command or the 1st Infantry Division which has jurisdiction over military forces in the province would investigate the lapses in security that resulted to the slaying of Macotocruz.

The Philippine Army also did not release any statement on the incident.
