President Rodrigo Roa Duterte expressed his satisfaction on
the operations being conducted by Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) units
against Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) bandits in Basilan.
This was stressed by AFP public affairs office chief Col.
Edgard Arevalo in a message Thursday.
"I am with you in the punitive and law enforcement
actions against the terrorist Abu Sayyaf Group," the military official
quoted the President as saying.
Duterte also told troopers, who gathered to meet him
to," just do your job" and promised that, "if you will fall into
trouble, or face cases due to such lawful performance of your duties, I will
take the cudgels for you."
The President was earlier briefed by 104th Infantry Brigade
commander Col. Cirilo Tomas Donato on the progress of the anti-ASG operations
in Basilan.
Present during the briefing, which was held at 104th
Infantry Brigade headquarters in Tabiawan town, Isabela, were AFP
chief-of-staff Gen. Ricardo Visaya, and heads of the Army, Navy, and Air Force
and other ranking military and police officials.
After the briefing, the President had a met and greet with
Basilan residents who patiently waited and had "selfies" with those
who requested.
In his extamperous speech, Duterte first thanked the
"Moros" for the votes they casted in his favor that credited to his
winning the presidency.
He exhorted the latter to remove hatred in their hearts and
start the national healing process and admonished the ASG for their numerous
crimes.
After his address, Duterte spearheaded the ceremonial
distribution of goods and had another photo-opportunity with soldiers and
police before having another dialogue with Basilan local chief executives.
Afterwards, the President and his party had aerial
inspection of the Basilan
Circumferential Road before proceeding to Western
Mindanao Command headquarters in Camp General Navarro, Zamboanga City
where he was given foyer honors and information briefing by WMC head Lt. Gen.
Mayoralgo Dela Cruz.
"Talk to men will follow, briefing is still in progress
(as this time)," Arevalo said.
