An improvised explosive device (IED), fashioned from a 81mm mortar shell, was discovered and disarmed by bomb disposal expert in Marawi City, Lanao Del Sur Friday early morning.

The IED was discovered in a roadway in Barangay Gadongan, Marawi City, said 1st Infantry Division public affairs office chief Lt. Col. Benedicto Manquiquis.

The roadway leads to Butig town, an area where the military is conducting operations against the Maute terrorist group.

It was discovered at 12:50 a.m. by patrolling elements of the Marawi City Police Station and disarmed by explosive ordnance expert from the Iligan City-PNP at 3:05 a.m.
