Gazmin to lead welcoming ceremonies for BRP Gregorio Velasquez

From the Philippine News Agency (Jun 9): Gazmin to lead welcoming ceremonies for BRP Gregorio Velasquez

Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin will lead the welcoming and arrival ceremonies for the Philippine Navy (PN)'s first survey ship, the BRP Gregorio Velasquez (AGR-702), at Pier 13, Manila South Harbor on Friday afternoon.

He will also be the event's guest-of-honor and speaker, said PN spokesperson Capt. Lued Lincuna.

The highlight will be the tribute and recognition of the laudable efforts of the sailors who were instrumental for the ship’s safe and successful voyage to the Philippines.

BRP Gregorio Velasquez arrived in the country Wednesday after almost a month and a half voyage from San Diego, California where it was formally turned over and commissioned to PN’s service last April 27.

She is the former R/V Melville of the United States’ Office of Naval Research and was operated by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography as part of the University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System.

BRP Gregorio Velasquez is one of the two ships pledged by US President Barrack Obama during his visit to the Philippines on November 2015 on the sidelines of APEC Leader’s Summit.
