Gazmin leaves behind PHP65.9-B worth of assets for AFP

From the Philippine News Agency (Jun 28): Gazmin leaves behind PHP65.9-B worth of assets for AFP

As he formally bids goodbye to the military, Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Voltaire Gazmin will be leaving PHP65.9 billion worth of assets to the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Capability and Upgrade Program when he steps down on Thursday.

"We thank President Aquino for the release to the DND-AFP of the total amount of PHP65.9 billion from July 2010 to June 2016 to finance the said program for the enhancement of the capability of our Armed Forces," he said in his speech during the testimonial parade Tuesday.

The event was held in front of GHQ Grandstand, Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City.

"Thus, our Armed Forces has now in its inventory newly-acquired various types of flying, floating and mobile air, sea, and land assets; armaments; and equipment to boost its operational readiness and defense capabilities," he added.

Some of the equipment acquired in this period include the two Hamilton-class cutters, six multi-purpose assault craft, 114 armored personnel carriers, three brand-new C-295 medium lift aircraft, two C-130 heavy transports, two FA-50PH light-interim fighter aircraft and eight attack versions of the AgustaWestland AW-109 "Power" helicopters, five landing craft heavies, three multi-purpose attack craft, and two strategic sealift vessels to name a few.

Gazmin will be replaced by Delfin Lorenzana, a member of Philippine Military Academy Class of 1973 and Special Presidential Representative and Head of the Office of Veteran Affairs at the Philippine Embassy in Washington DC.

"Additionally, our Armed Forces continue to be the future beneficiary of the ongoing projects that are now in the pipeline, that would ensure the continuity of its development and progress into a credible defense force," the outgoing DND chief said.
