From GMA News (Jun 23): Cotabato blast hurts student, 2 soldiers

A student and two soldiers were injured in an explosion that rocked Midsayap town in Cotabato, a television report said Thursday. A report on GMA News' Unang Balita said the blast was caused by an improvised explosive device (IED).

The wounded student was identified as Meriam Sangki, 16, a Grade 10 student of the Dapbil Sampulna Olandang High School (DSOHS). On the other hand, injured soldiers were identified as Sgt. Edwin Soria and PFC Jestoni Bauzon, both members of the 62nd Division Reconnaissance Company Philippine Army.

Citing initial information, the report said the IED went off at about 7:40 a.m. as soldiers were passing by the DSOHS. Midsayap Chief of Police Supt. Tom Tuzon, was quoted as saying that members of the rebel Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) was behind the blast.

Tuzon claimed that after the explosion the BIFF fired several shots, prompting the soldiers to fire back. All three victims were rushed to the Amado Diaz Provincial Hospital. Police and the military investigators are looking into the the incident.
