The Philippine National Police (PNP) confirmed on Tuesday
the awards and recognitions to be given to the gallant 44 Special Action Force
(SAF) troopers killed in Mamasapano, Maguindanao on January 25, 2015.
Senior Supt. Manuel M. Abu, chief of PNP Morale and Welfare
Division (MWD) said that the awards given to SAF 44 were based on the
deliberation of the Special Promotion Awards and Decoration Board.
All 44 SAF commandos were given Posthumous Promotion effective
January 25, 2015.
Abu also said that two of the 44 SAF commandos, namely Sr.
Inspector Gednat Garambas Tabdi and PO2 Romeo Cumanoy Cepron were recommended
to be recipients of the Medalya ng Kagitingan (Medal of Valor) coming from the
Office of the President.
According to Abu, the two were found to be qualified for the
said recognition while the 42 other SAF troops were already given the PNP
Distinguished Conduct Medal on December 28, 2015.
Abu said that out the 30 SAF survivors, 29 were granted for
special promotions. However, only 25 of them availed of the said promotion.
He explained the other four granted waived the said
promotions because they applied for the PNP Distinguished Conduct Medal.
One of the survivors, Supt. Raymond Train was awarded with
the PNP Distinguished Conduct Medal.
The SAF troopers were recommended to receive the awards for
their “conspicuous gallantry and commitment to duty at the risk of their life”
when they fought members of Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), Bangsamoro Islamic
Freedom Fighters (BIFF) and other lawless elements during a police operation
that resulted to the neutralization of international terrorist Zulkifli Bin Hir
(also known as Marwan) at Barangay Tukanalipao, in Mamasapano, Maguindanao on
January 25, 2015.
