Rebel slain in Butuan City clash

From the Philippine News Agency (Dec 3): Rebel slain in Butuan City clash

Troopers from the 29th Infantry Battalion shot and killed a New People's Army (NPA) bandit during an encounter in Butuan City Thursday morning.

The clash took place at 5 a.m. at the vicinity of Sitio Dugyaman, Barangay Anticala, of the above-mentioned locality.

Concerned residents reported to the military the NPA presence in the area.

Capt. Joe Patrick Martinez, 4th Infantry Division spokesman, said civilians were also threatened by the NPA's frequent lectures on "Batakang Kursong Pang Masa" (NPA Basic Mass Course) and extortion activities.

He added 29th Infantry Battalion troopers were immediately deployed to the area, triggering a 25-minute firefight which left one rebel dead.

Martinez said the NPAs indiscriminately fired and threatened the lives of nearby civilians.

Recovered from the encounter scene was a fallen NPA, an AK-47 automatic rifle, an AR-18 rifle, nine IEDs (improvised explosive device), 10 backpacks with NPA personal belongings, and subversive documents with high intelligence value.
