11 Manobo NPA members in Davao Del Norte surrender

From the Philippine News Agency (Oct 16): 11 Manobo NPA members in Davao Del Norte surrender

Eleven Manobo members of the New People's Army (NPA) voluntarily surrendered to the 10th Infantry Division units in Sitio Patil, Barangay Gupitan, Kapalong town in Davao Del Norte.

Capt. Rhyan Batchar, 10th Infantry Division public affairs office chief, in a message Friday, said the surrender took place last Oct. 10.

He added that the Manobos surrendered to troopers of the 60th Infantry Battalion.

The returnees also handed one firearm and three improvised explosive devices to government troops.

Batchar said the 11 all reside in Kapalong town.

Eight are members of the Guerilla Front 34 of the NPA while the rest came from the different armed units of the Sub-Regional Committee 4.

Six of them revealed that they have stayed for months at the UCCP-Haran compound in Davao City.

"Their return to the folds of the law is a welcome development in our efforts of supporting other government agencies and the local populace bring peace and development to Talaingod and Kapalong. We hope that this will encourage other active NPAs to finally abandon the armed struggle," 10th Infantry Division commander Major Gen. Rafael Valencia said.

For the year 2015, a total of 311 former rebels with 32 assorted high-powered firearms surrendered to the 10th Infantry Division.

Majority of these former rebels are Lumads, which shows that members of the indigenous people who are mostly in far-flung areas are the most vulnerable to NPA recruitment and exploitation.
