From the Philippine News Agency (Sep 24): Armed men burned banana-laden container van in Surigao del Sur

Heavily armed men believed to be members of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People's Army (CPP-NPA) burned a container van loaded with banana along the portion of the National Highway at a coastal town of a southern province here in the region Wednesday afternoon.

Reports from Camp Vicente L. Pimentel Sr., Surigao del Sur Police Provincial Office reaching Camp Rafael C. Rodriguez, the police regional headquarters here on Thursday, said that at 3:55 p.m. on Wednesday, about 15 heavily armed men flagged down a banana-laden container van along the portion of the national highway at Brgy. Liatimco, Lianga, Surigao del Sur.

The driver of the container van (Plate No. PUU 243) identified by the police investigators a certain Roel Rodriguez, was told to alight from the vehicle, then the perpetrators fired upon the van and set fire its rear portion.

The container van loaded with boxes of banana said to be owned by DOLE Philippines, was traveling from Brgy. Dayoan, Tago Surigao del Sur, and was heading towards Panabo City, Davao del Norte, according to the initial police investigation.

The suspects fled towards an unknown direction after the burning incident.

Police investigators from Lianga Municipal Police Station are now investigating the incident.

No casualties were however reported in connection with the incident.
