An alert Army patrol foiled a rebel attack in a mountain
village in Bukidnon on Sunday, but four soldiers were wounded in the ensuing
firefight, the military reported Monday.
A report said that the Army patrol clashed with suspected
members of the New People’s Army (NPA) in the mountains of Kitaotao, Bukidnon
while village officials were holding a meeting.
Capt. Norman Tagros, spokesperson of the Army’s 8IB, said
that village chief Felipe S. Cabugnason of White Kuliman, a mountain village in
Kitaotao, Bukidnon, called the military after noticing a group of armed men,
not far from the village.
He said that the responding army soldiers of the 8IB caught
and encountered the armed group believed to be members of the New People’s Army
(NPA), which resulted in the 30-minute firefight.
Tagros said that the rebels detonated an improvised
explosive device against the pursuing government troopers, which injured four
Army personnel. However, he did not identify the wounded soldiers.
He said that the residents in the village of White Kuliman
claimed that the NPA rebels threatened to kill them after the village residents
reportedly denied entry to non-government organizations (NGOs) in the village
last month.
Tagros said the village chief alleged that the NGOs want the
military to leave the place. However, residents wanted the soldiers to stay due
to their fear that the NPA rebels would take over the place and kill them.
Lt. Col. Lennon B. Babilonia, commanding officer of the
Army’s 8IB, condemned the continued deployment of the landmines by the NPAs and
urged the local village residents to support the military in their security
operations in Bukidnon.
