From the Sun Star-Davao (Aug 16): Soldier hurt in gun battle
A SOLDIER was wounded in an encounter with suspected members of the New People's Army-Southern Mindanao Regional Committee at sitio Sta. Lucia in Barangay Camanlangan, New Bataan town in Compostela Valley, Saturday.
In a statement, Captain Alberto Caber, chief of the public information office (PIO) of the Eastern Mindanao Command, said the 20-minute firefight happened around 1 p.m. The soldier has remained unidentified as of press time Sunday.
Soldiers belonging to the 25th Infantry Battalion of the 10th Infantry Division (ID) were conducting security patrol in the area when they clashed with the rebels.
The wounded soldier was rushed to the medical facility for further treatment.
At least 20 NPA rebels fled after the encounter, while the troops have launched pursuit operation.
Lieutenant Colonel Michelle Anayron, commander of the 25th ID, said they will give due recognition to the soldier who risked his life to protect the civilians in the area.
"Our soldiers and their respective families have sacrificed a lot if only to win the peace," Anayron said.
