From the Sun Star-Davao (Aug 16): Another rebel surrenders
ANOTHER suspected member of the New People's Army (NPA) voluntarily surrendered to government troops in Barangay Libon, Gingoog City last August 12.
The Eastern Mindanao Command (EastMinCom) only identified the rebel returnee as alias Bangoy, who surrendered to the 58th Infantry Battalion (IB) of the 4th Infantry Division.
The rebel returnee is undergoing debriefing at the 58th IB headquarters.
Lieutenant Colonel Jose Ariel Niembra, commander of the 58th IB, commended the local officials and relatives of Bangoy for their participation in the return of the former NPA rebel to the fold of the government.
"He wants to start a new life and avail of the Comprehensive Local Integration Program of the Department of Interior and Local Government," Niembra said in a statement.
As of August 10, EastMinCom recorded a total of 187 NPA members who have surrendered to the government, said EastMinCom commander Lieutenant General Aurelio Baladad.
