From the Philippine News Agency (Jul 17): Soldier to send money to family when gunned by NPA rebels in Masbate

A soldier who was a member of the Philippine Army Bayanihan Team doing peace and development projects was gunned down by the Special Partisan Unit (Sparu) of the New People's Army (NPA) on Thursday at the pier of Barangay Bangcaray, San Jacinto, Masbate.

A police report said victim Cpl. Aldrin Pahila was leaving for Masbate City via a boat to send money to his family when the rebels, armed with .45-caliber pistols, approached him and shot him on his head and body.


Pahila's companions immediately came to reinforce him but were not able to catch up with the suspects.

The report said the victim had been assigned in the area for several months already, doing development projects in poor villages of the town.
