Pacific Fleet commander's visits highlight PHL-US alliance

From the Philippine News Agency (Jul 17): Pacific Fleet commander's visits highlight PHL-US alliance

Pacific Fleet commander Admiral Scott Swift's visit to the country reiterates the importance of the Philippines-United States alliance.

This was stressed when the ranking naval officer made the Philippines the first stop of his first visit to allied nations in the region.

In line with this, Swift called on the newly-installed Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief-of-staff Lt. Gen. Hernando DCA Iriberri in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City on Friday.

He was accorded full military honors and was warmly received by Filipino military personnel.

Afterwards, Swift made his customary office call on Iriberri.

The AFP chief and the US Pacific Fleet commander were joined by key members of their staff.

For almost half an hour, the two military leaders engaged in friendly banter and had frank exchanges on various security topics.

Both leaders also shared that a move for more multilateral military activities would be a positive step and should be explored further to contribute in ensuring greater stability and security in the region.

Swift also informed Iriberri that this was his first visit to the region as US Pacific Fleet commander following his installation six weeks ago.

Prior his visit to Iriberri, the American naval official visited the Philippine Navy headquarters along Roxas Blvd. in Manila and called on PN flag officer-in-command Vice Admiral Jesus C. Millan Friday.

Swift was awarded by Millan with the Honorary Flag Rank Command Badge in recognition of the US Pacific Fleet's continuous dedication, assistance and support rendered to the PN.

The former and his and party arrived in the country last July 16 for an official visit to engage with senior military officials, and pay respect to the service members laid to rest at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial.

Swift is the 35th commander of the US Pacific Fleet. He assumed his post on May 27 when he replaced Admiral Harry B. Harris, the current commander of United States Pacific Command.
