Iqbal admits he used alias to sign peace accord, but DOJ says it's not an issue

From InterAksyon (Apr 8): Iqbal admits he used alias to sign peace accord, but DOJ says it's not an issue

What's in a name?  Plenty, especially if you are a revolutionary, according to Marikina Representative Romero Federico Quimbo.

"If you're a rebel and you don't have a nom de guerre, then you're irrelevant," Quimbo said.

"You need this to protect your name and to carry out a message.  Each name represents something," he added.

At the hearing of the Mamasapano clash at the House of Representatives, Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) chairman Mohagher Iqbal acknowledged that he has many aliases.

"I have many names, and it is natural for a member of a revolutionary organization," he said.

Iqbal added that even Marcelo del Pilar, a writer and lawyer who fought the Spanish rule, had nine names.

Despite a law prohibiting it, Justice Secretary Leila de Lima said the use of aliases among revolutionaries could be considered an exception.

"We also have to consider that there is a tacit recognition of the government or concerned sectors about the use of aliases, especially given the fact that I know that is a common practice among revolutionaries to use aliases," she said.

Asked by Antipolo Representative Romeo Acop if it was legal for Igbal to use his alias in signing documents, De Lima said that it would be acceptable as long as the person concerned acknowledges this.

"If the person concerned does not deny and if he is in fact the one who signed the document then that is not an issue," she added.

At the hearing, Iqbal begged off from divulging his real name "because of some sensitivities."

He also said that the Department of Foreign Affairs has information about the name he uses in his passport.
