The Department of Defense (DND) is indefinitely suspending the procurement of three additional vessels for the Navy, worth P270 million, in the absence of a revised AFP Modernization Program.
“The procurement
process relative to this project shall resume once the revised AFP
Modernization Program is approved and funds for the purpose are released by the
Department of Budget and Management,” DND Special Bids and Awards Committee
vice chairman Patrick Velez said in a supplemental bid bulletin.
The deadline for
the submission and opening of bids was scheduled for Monday. The vessels that
the Defense department seeks to acquire are those capable of rough sea
conditions sans system degradation.
The vessels will
also “be fitted with provisions for installation of advanced weapon systems”,
specifically remote weapons system as well as missile launch system which will
be acquired through another project.”
The revised AFP
Modernization Program, which calls for a P75 billion funding, was passed in
Congress in 2012.
Aquino has yet to
approve the release of the funds.
Despite this,
Aquino has already given the go signal to several modernization projects, such
as the acquisition of 12 FA-50 fighter jets from the Korean Aerospace
Industries for P18.9 billion and procurement of two frigates for P18 billion.
