From the Sun Star-Zamboanga (Mar 30): Booby trap kills militiaman, injures 2
A MILITIAMAN was killed while two others were wounded in a booby trap explosion perpetrated by the New People's Army (NPA) rebels in South Cotabato.
Colonel Romeo Brawner Jr., Eastern Mindanao Command (Eastmincom) spokesman, said the incident took place around 7 a.m. Sunday in the village of Poblacion, T'boli, South Cotabato.
Brawner identified the fatality as militiamen Moreno Edding, who died on the spot.
Wounded were Dante Digdigan and Samuel Damucom. They were rushed to the hospital for treatment.
Brawner said the three militiamen were removing a streamer made of sack the rebels have posted along the road as the NPA marked the movement's 46th founding anniversary. The militiamen were unaware that the streamer was laden with a grenade booby trap that suddenly exploded upon removal.
Eastmincom chief Lieutenant General Aurelio Baladad condemned the act, saying: "Employing booby traps is an inhumane act and a clear violation of the International Humanitarian Law because the trap cannot choose its targets."
"The device was not command-detonated, and could have easily victimized any individual or barangay folks passing along this public road. It only manifests their true nature as terrorists," Baladad added.
