In line with American efforts to strengthen maritime
partnership in the Pacific, US Navy Patrol Squadron 45 (VP-45) invited
Philippine Navy and Air Force personnel to a bilateral air patrol mission last
Feb. 17.
This was announced by the US Embassy in Manila in a statement Friday.
The air patrol was conducted aboard a US Navy P-8A Poseidon
aircraft.
VP-45 is on temporary rotational detachment to the Clark Air
Base in support of US Commander 7th Fleet’s mission to strengthen maritime
partnerships in the Pacific Region.
The P-8A conducts anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface
warfare, and shipping interdiction, along with an electronic signals
intelligence role.
This involves carrying torpedoes, depth charges, SLAM-ER
missiles, Harpoon anti-ship missiles, and other weapons.
It is able to drop and monitor sonobuoys. It is designed to
operate in conjunction with the Northrop Grumman MQ-4C Triton broad area
maritime surveillance unmanned aerial vehicle.
