NPA rebels burn backhoe owned by Camarines Sur town LGU

From the Philippine News Agency (Feb 27): NPA rebels burn backhoe owned by Camarines Sur town LGU

New People's Army (NPA) rebels burned the backhoe owned by the local government unit (LGU) of Baao town in Camarines Sur being used by municipal employees working on a project in Sitio Alsum, Barangay Buluang, Baao Thursday morning.

Equipment operator Mariano Castillo, a resident of Barangay San Francisco in the same town, said the burning of the backhoe occurred at about 8:10 a.m. while he was working on the project.

Castillo said two armed NPA members suddenly arrived, told him to stop working and got the key to the heavy equipment from him.

The rebels poured gasoline into the engine of the backhoe and set it on fire, he said.

After the incident, the rebels immediately fled the area towards an unknown direction, leaving Castillo unharmed.

He immediately reported the incident to the police.

Authorities believe the NPA was asking for revolutionary tax from the local government unit which, in turn, rejected the demand.
